Chosen Designs, based in Toronto, is an online retail/accessories fashion brand. Specializing in delivering unique high-quality eyewear / sunglasses, and urban trendy fashion.
Our CEO Mandi interviewed Mickella about her secret to success in business and in life. We also got some awesome insights into what they think makes social media such an effective tool in business.
A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
Chosen Designs has been in business for about a year now, but officially launched March of 2020.
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start Chosen Designs?
Chosen Designs was originally started to help me pay through school. As my business grew and after attending a business program (Biz Start), it helped me to find and realize my Why. Giving me a new focus, and finding more joy and passion for my business.
3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?
I love that I am able to accomplish what I’ve put my mind to. I love that I take pride and joy in my business. Being the first entrepreneur, female entrepreneur, in my household is also a great accomplishment, showing that anything is possible once you believe in yourself. Being an entrepreneur comes with a lot of lessons and learning experiences as well, but I always ensure my customers are provided with the best customer service because they are who make my business.
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your own business?
The hardest thing I had to overcome specifically as my business grew was receiving honest feedback from other female entrepreneurs, mainly for advice or help. Exploring this field I felt a lot of competition at times, but I feel like we should all work together as a community to grow and encourage each other.
5: What is one thing about working in the fashion industry that people would be surprised to learn?
Trends are always changing. As a fashion business, you have to seek out new trends and/or creative designs to align or differentiate from others. Being different and offering unique experiences or styles is important when in this industry.

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?
My favourite social media platform currently is Instagram. I love that I am able to market myself through images, videos, and creativity. I love that I am able to communicate with my customers; building relationships. Instagram has played a huge part with the start of my business, I am able to market myself, generate sales, bring personality, and show others my creativity while Chosen Designs grows.
7: What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company?
Social media as a whole is a huge platform. People can interact through posts, comments, pictures, likes, contests, communication, etc. I found that it was a great way to bring exposure while getting the message across about my business. Having multiple social media accounts also brings a wide variety of exposure and potential customers. It’s easy to use and navigate as well, where I can bring forth different content, from what’s trending, to what’s going on worldwide, to the use of hashtags, etc.
8: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
Social media has been a great effective marketing tool for Chosen Designs. Instagram mainly has been the platform where I have been generating sales until my website has been launched. I am able to be myself, show my products, communicate with others, and show everyone about Chosen Designs. It has really grown from where I started.
9: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
Utilize these social media platforms as much as possible. Show creativity, be consistent, try to post at least once a day. Try to bring unique experiences for your customers for example contests, interactive posts, just simple communication, and being involved. Checking up on your customers as well to show how much you care etc.

Mickella Rumbolt, the owner of Chosen Designs, is a 24-year-old fashion arts and business graduate from Humber College. I am very passionate about what I do. I believe that everyone is chosen, chosen for greatness, and it’s just one for one to believe in themselves and to always push for whatever their heart desires. I am a designer and young entrepreneur, ready for anything that comes on my journey.
