A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur
1: How long have you been in business?
Since the summer of 2018.
2: What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start making jewelry?
It’s been a very long time since I had a 9-5 job as I’ve been home with my boys for 9 years. Once they started school full time, I started creating (not jewelry lol) and it just spiraled up from there. I consistently just went with my gut and now here i am!
3: What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur?
I don’t actually ever think of myself as a “female” entrepreneur…it’s funny though because I’m surrounded and Kingston is full of female entrepreneurs….. I just see myself and other entrepreneurs as a group of kick-ass, strong humans, that see the benefits of following our passions. Passions that can morph and grow into businesses we’re proud of.
For me, as hokey as it sounds, the thing I love most about being an entrepreneur is the support and understanding I get, daily, from other entrepreneurs. The strong friendships I’ve made, the ability to share ideas and get inspired.
4: What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as a female entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to become a jewelry maker?
The biggest thing I’ve had to overcome in being in business is getting over all the self-doubt. Not believing I was capable or worthy of success. I still have imposter syndrome and it’s a conscious decision every single day to step away from that kind of thinking and truly start believing in all my abilities
5: What is one thing about working in the maker industry that people would be surprised to learn?
People may be surprised that the majority of us are introverts and really don’t love putting ourselves out there at the markets. Most of us really have a hard time public speaking or even attending networking events. All the things that are required from us, are the things we have the hardest time doing.

6: Do you have a favorite social media platform? Why?
Definitely Insta! It’s where I started my smartphoneography and found the community was overwhelmingly supportive, so when I started my jewelry page, it grew naturally. I do a lot of online transactions through IG. I post a story about a piece of jewelry (or a customer posts on IG) and I get DM’s wanting to purchase right away.
7: How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?
Insta was a natural progression from selling my smartphone photography to selling jewelry. If it’s used properly and authentically, it’s an incredible tool. It helps that I love photography and taking photos of my merchandise on models and in flatlays…. it keeps the visual consistent.
8: What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?
Oh gawd, there’s so much advice that could be given…
But I would say….
Learn how to use it properly. Don’t buy your followers. Numbers don’t matter as much as engagement. You could have a million followers but if no one is commenting or pressing “like” then there is no use….
Authenticity. Be you! And only you. Don’t try to be like your favorite influencers or your competitors, just be you. Admit your mistakes and your shortcomings and just have fun

I’m sherry Jeffery, founder of Sherry Jeffery Artist.
My journey to this point started with smartphoneography, then clay trinket bowls which turned into clay jewelry which morphed into the jewelry I create today.
My designs are said to be uniquely bold yet incredibly feminine. A balance of trendy, delicate and chunky. Statement pieces that will be noticed but not overbearing.
